The Yungdrung Bön Mala and Mantra Recitation

More than 18,000 years ago, Buddha Tönpa Shenrap created the first mala, or trengwa as it is called in Tibetan. Why and how did he bring it into manifestation? What are the appropriate colors for a mala? What materials can it be made from? How did he instruct his disciples to hold and use the mala? In this class, we will cover these questions and more as we learn the history and use of the Yungdrung Bön mala.

Because the mala is primarily used for the recitation of mantra, we will learn proper behavior while reciting mantra, how to multiply the power of our mantra recitations, and how to accumulate mantra recitations in order to receive the power and blessings of the mantra.

Mantras are considered a protection for the mind, among other things, and integrating them into your daily life supports your spiritual practice, integrates that practice into your life between formal practice sessions, and is a skillful tool that helps to navigate challenging situations, emotions, and thought patterns.

We will learn mantras that are used for a variety of purposes and how to use them. Mantras will include the following, but if time allows we will cover even more. These mantras are not restricted and can be recited by anyone.

  • Mantra to Transform Any Liquid into Nectar
  • The Three Essence Mantras of Yungdrung Bön 
  • The Five Warrior Seed Syllable Mantra
  • Mantras of the Five Daily Offerings
  • Mantras of Water and Smoke Purification
  • Mantras of the Three Enlightened Bodies
  • Mantra to Multiply the Power of Prostrations
  • Mantra to Bless and Strengthen the Eyes

As source texts, we will be drawing upon Buddha Tönpa Shenrap’s hagiography, Stainless Blazing Splendor, The Thirteen Daily Yogas written by the sage Shardza Tashi Gyaltsen Rinpoche, and the writings of the renowned scholar and spiritual master His Eminence Menri Pönlop Yangtön Trinley Nyima Rinpoche.
